3 Events That Will Scare You this Halloween

Halloween or All Hallows Eve is a time of myth and magic, left over from an age where small men walked and shamans shifted, greeting the darkness with respect and marking the passage of the veil, as it swept close to the living world. Instead of pelt thick finery, our children and young adults now stripe the streets with their colourful presence, dressing up as ghosts, witches, faeries and super heroes; there isn’t an English speaking person worldwide who doesn’t know that lingering phrase of taunting gaiety, trick or treat. While a sugar rush is a terrifying prospect for any parent at the end of a neighbourhood round, here are three events that will have you quivering where you stand, morbidly curious but mortally afraid.

A Halloween in the comfort of your own home can be
just as horrific as trading urban legends or bobbing
for apples, at the mercy of cameras and Facebook.

Lounge Room Slasher Fest

While it’s nice to catch up with our fellow friends and foes over a goblet of ghouls blood (red wine), a Halloween in the comfort of your own home can be just as horrific as trading urban legends or bobbing for apples, at the mercy of cameras and Facebook. Get a couple of friends together, score a few bags on candy, heat some popcorn and snuggle in close as your senses are assaulted by the B-grade screams of 1980’s horror flicks (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween) and a few 90’s classics to add a bit of variety (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Hills Have Eyes). Even if you don’t scare easily, everybody usually has an opinion on what the poor victim did wrong at one point or another!

Fright Night

Imagine, for a moment, you’re darkest imaginings have come to life and your childhood nightmares really lurk around the next corner, as you are chased down by a horde of zombies…Bone tingling. Movie World on the Gold Coast are hosting their annual Fright Night with a couple new surprises thrown into the staggering mix – though it may be only a formula of effective acting, prosthetics and atmospheric music, your stomach will drop to your feet more than once, as you hear their feet coming. Are you absolutely dying for a sneak peak? Check out themeparks.com.au on Youtube for teeth chattering highlights.

Haunted House

Do you remember that house? The house on the corner everybody avoided, for the want of a shred of courage instead of common sense? The windows that attracted stories and whispers, moaning tales of misdeeds and deaths, hauntings and strange things, impossible things, noisy and unruly happenings? Transform your house into an otherworldly creation on Halloween and invite the children of your neighbourhood inside, testing their wits and hearts against jumps and knocks, the gentle yet malevolent thud-thud-thudding of something in basement…And reward them at the end with handfuls of candy! What’s Halloween night without at least one haunted house, right? Dare to be scary, lest you be scared.

Halloween traditions vary from household to household. What will you do this year? Let us know in the comments!
