tableware care guide

Sterling silver tableware is dishwasher safe and only requires a tiny bit of detergent to wash. When storing sterling silver, keep it away from sulfur, which is found in rubber and wool, because silver and sulfur will react. Gold vermeil and gold plated tableware should be hand washed with mild soap and stored in a soft-lined flatware case to avoid scratching and damages. Silver plate tableware is dishwasher safe and requires a small amount of citric-acid free detergent, and it should also be washed separately from stainless steel because the metals will react and discolor the silver.

Stainless steel tableware is dishwasher safe, but avoid hand washings stainless steel with hard-bristled brushes or scouring pads, which can wear away the chromium oxide film. White porcelain and decal or underglaze porcelain is usually dishwasher and microwave safe, but be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations just in case. Hand painted porcelain and metallic porcelain should be hand washed with mild soap and are not microwave safe.

Most glassware is dishwasher safe, except for blown glass, which is typically too delicate to be placed in the dishwasher. Crystal should be hand washed with mild soap, unless your dishwasher has a crystal setting, and you can use glass polish on both glassware and crystal ware to remove the film that forms with regular washing.

Your tableware is meant to be used, and with the proper care, you can use it as often as you like instead of saving it for that one special occasion. Happy dining!
