Important Things to Keep in Mind When Moving into a New Place

Moving homes is an exciting but stressful time that requires you to juggle many things at once and wage war on different fronts. So, it’s not really a surprise that people usually forget to take care of some important things or decide to leave them for the last minute. However, there are things that shouldn’t be postponed or neglected. Here’s a list of important things you should keep in mind when moving into a new place.

Take care of your utilities

This might seem obvious now, but so many people forget to transfer their energy bill, which may leave previous tenants paying for your energy usage. Luckily, the process is quite simple: contact your energy provider, give them your personal information and viola. Just don’t leave it until the last minute. Another important thing you should take care of is the Internet. If you want to avoid the inconvenience of living in a home without Internet access, you should call your provider as soon as possible (they’re often booked for weeks).

Don’t rush it

If you don’t want to spend the whole weekend packing boxes without a break, make a schedule and give yourself a daily quota. Pack a few boxes every day and you’ll have enough energy left for unpacking when you move to your new place.

Pack a necessity box

If you want to spend a pleasant day at your new home, pack a necessity box. It should contain some spare clothes, pajamas, bed linen, basic hygiene products and some snacks and drinks. You should also pack some basic tools, screws, scissors, tape, glue and protection gear for when you start working on your new place and putting furniture together. If you pack all of these things in the same box, you will save a lot of time and nerves on rummaging through boxes and boxes of stuff.

Rent a good truck

No move can go smoothly without a good moving truck. You can move a couple of boxes with your car, but bulkier things will never fit, so book your truck in advance. If you want to rent a truck and drive yourself, make sure their vehicle models can be operated with a standard driver’s license. Additionally, there are companies that provide easy truck hire in Brisbane and also offer boxes and trolleys, so if you don’t have those accessories ready, they could come in very handy.

Change the lock

Now that you have the keys to your new place, it’s time to change the lock and make a few spare keys for your family and even a trusted friend. You want to feel relaxed at your home and not think whether someone will barge in. So, call a locksmith or embark on a little DIY project if you’re handy.

Give it a thorough scrub

Even though most properties go through a floor-to-ceiling clean after previous tenants leave, sometimes a house will stay on the market for a long time, which means it’s ready for another scrub. Your best bet is to hire professional cleaners who will steam all the carpets and furniture and thoroughly scrub your bathroom and kitchen.

Get to know the neighborhood

This is an important step, especially if you have kids who aren’t taking the move very lightly. Once you take a tour around the block and check out all the fun things you can do in your new environment, your kids will be excited about their new home. On your first walk, try to locate supermarkets and hardware stores, because you’ll need them in the near future.

Once you do all of these things, your move will go smoothly and stress-free and you’ll be ready to enjoy your new home and your new life in peace and happiness.
