Choose a room with ample space to accommodate your guests. You need to designate a room for them while they are in your house. If you do not have a guest room, you might have to temporarily convert your den or basement into a bedroom. A day bed or a convertible sofa bed will be the best furniture option for you. You can also consider getting pull-out beds or foldable beds if your guests have children with them. Alternatively, you can have their kids bunk in with your own kids. It might be a little awkward at first, but they will soon find something in common to talk about. Preparing your home for house guests also means briefing your children and all the other family members about the visit so they can prepare for it as well.

Clean the room and provide fresh linen. After you have chosen a room for your visitors, you have to do a general cleaning. Going from top to bottom is always recommended, starting with dusting the ceiling and changing the light bulbs if necessary to giving the floors or carpet a good scrub. You also have to change your curtains and linen. You might take these things for granted, but they are actually key elements that make the room inviting and comfortable.

Add welcoming touches. You can decorate your appointed guest room according to what you think will look pleasant to your visiting family or friends. When you are finished with your decorating, it would be a good idea to cap it off with some welcoming touches. It could be vases of fresh flowers in focal points around the room. You can also put in a fruit basket if you have a small nook in your “guest room.” If your guests are visiting because of business, you can set up a mini office in one corner of the room and have a pad of paper and some pens ready for him to jot down his thoughts. Add a welcome note to express how glad you are to have him or them in your home. All the effort you exerted in preparing your home for house guests will be worth it when you see your guests enjoying their stay with you.
